Derrick Pierre' Duncan

Wiregrass Youth Choral Society, Incorporated Founder/ Executive Director

Derrick Pierre’ Duncan loves to give God praise through his many gifts and talents of playing the piano, directing the choir, and helping people in his local community.  At the early age of six years old, Derrick began to play the piano with his mother (the late Janice Carolyn Roberson), who gave him his first piano lesson. After the first music lesson, music exhilarated Derrick desires to learn more about playing and singing.  Playing the piano became an integral part of his life and people began to notice and to nurture his gifts and talents in Dothan, Alabama and Kansas City, Missouri where he lived as a young child. As a young man, growing up in  Kansas City and Dothan, Derrick played the piano for many churches, served as Drum Major for Jr. & High school, taught Drum Major skills to other youth, and volunteered in his community by teaching and illustrating music fundamental to his friends, family and church  members. After graduating from high school, Derrick earned an Associate Degree in Music and Nursing from George C. Wallace Community College.  He also earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Auburn University in Montgomery.

Derrick has been inspired to share his God giving gifts and talents by organizing a youth organization that brings talent youth together to appreciate, to enjoy, and exhilarate their lives through cultural and social experiences. He currently serves as the Minister of Music at New Bethel Baptist Church. He is a member of the Greater Beulah Missionary Baptist Church.  He is the Founder and Executive Director of the Wiregrass Youth Choral Society, Incorporated.  He is an employee at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center where he works as a Registered Nurse.  Derrick also works as a part-time Associate Nursing Instructor at George C. Wallace Community College.  He is a member of the National League of Nurses Association, National Leadership and Management Council, Alabama Nurses Association, and the Rho Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity Incorporated.

Derrick has received countless awards and honors for his unselfish acts of kindness and for sharing his many talents. His love and compassion for youth is exemplified in the Wiregrass Youth Choral Society concerts performance and tireless work notice in the Pursuit of HappYness cultural enrichment program. One of the most exciting times for Derrick was the honor and privilege to be chosen as a Camp Vocal Instructor and Conductor at the 2006 & 2007 Ruben Studdard Music Camp.  Derrick continues to give of himself by teaching, both young and old, piano lessons as well as voice coaching and mentoring. One of Derrick’s “life long goals” is to better humanity- one person at a time- on their own level.  One of Derrick’s favorite quotes which were written by Raymond Raspberry is to “Touch somebody’s life with your goodness, touch somebody’s life with your love, and touch somebody’s life with your understanding.  For that’s the only way to show our Father’s love.”
